Fire merger takes shape

District board sworn in

BY ALLEN HOWARD
The Cincinnati Enquirer

SILVERTON — Board members appointed to serve on a joint fire district for Silverton and Deer Park were sworn in Tuesday night.

Frank Maupin, president, will represent the residents of Deer Park. Art Hackett, a former mayor of Silverton, will represent the residents of Silverton.

Councilwoman Sandra Hall-Rymer will be vice president and represent Deer Park City Council. Councilwoman Carrie McLemore-Walker will represent Silverton City Council.

Representing safety will be Dave O'Leary, safety director for Deer Park, and Paul Steman, safety and service manager for Silverton.

Business representatives will be Will Meinzen, owner of Silverton Hardware, and Jim Weckenbrock, owner of Stewart Industries in Deer Park.

The board members will set policy and be responsible for operation of the district.

“This is a major step in forming the joint district,” said Silverton Fire Chief Don Newman. Chief Newman will be fire chief of the joint district. Deer Park Fire Chief Tom Camp will serve as deputy.

Chief Newman said financial arrangements and the office portion of the district's new building should be complete by April 1.

The joint district will be in the former Provident Bank Building, 7050 Blue Ash Road, Silverton.

Purchasing and renovating the building was financed by a $1.3 million loan to be paid back by both cities and the fire district board.

Chief Newman said the building will be remodeled to house the fire equipment, and he expects that portion to be occupied by Oct. 1.

Fire chiefs from both cities started planning the joint district in 1996. Voters approved a levy to operate the joint district in November.
