Norse squander blow late lead

OWENSBORO, Ky. Dana Williams made a layup with 27 seconds left to give Kentucky Wesleyan the lead for good in a 69-65 victory.
The loss sent the Norse to their 11th consecutive loss in Owensboro.
Northern Kentucky, down by 12 points early in the second half, led 65-61 after a jump shot by Craig Sanders (McNicholas), but Kentucky Wesleyan, ranked No.1 in NCAA Division II, held the Norse scoreless the rest of the game.
Sanders led all scorers with 21 points and Adam Norwell (Anderson) had 19 points and 12 rebounds for NKU (12-6, 9-5 Great Lakes Valley.
Antonio Garcia had 18 points and 12 rebounds for Kentucky Wesleyan (20-1, 13-1). Northern Kentucky plays Bellarmine at 8p.m. Saturday at Louisville.
Northern Kentucky 71, Kentucky Wesleyan 57, at Owensboro, Ky. Freshman forward Michelle Cottrell scored 26 of her game-high 30 points in the second half as the Norse won their eighth in a row.
Cottrell (Boone County) was 11-of-18 from the field and 8-of-9 from the free throw line and also led NKU with 10 rebounds. Michele Tuchfarber (Mount Notre Dame) scored 15 points.
