Missing teen's case hits national TV

BY JANICE MORSE
The Cincinnati Enquirer

MILLVILLE — The case of missing teen Bessie Lou McCoy, thought to be on the run with her much older boyfriend, is featured in a segment of Maury Povich's TV show scheduled to air Thursday.

“Help Me Find My Missing Child” is to air locally at 10 a.m. on WKRC-TV (Channel 12).

Bessie, 16, disappeared Sept. 21, along with her boyfriend, James H. “Jay” Smith, 35, of Trenton. The case is being investigated by the Butler County sheriff's office and the county Child Assault Task Force.

Mr. Smith faces felony charges for being nearly $30,000 behind in child support for his three children, who live in Lexington, Ky., including a teen-age son he allegedly took on double dates with Bessie and her sister last summer.

For his alleged misconduct with Bessie and her sister, Mr. Smith also faces seven other charges: a felony count of corruption of a minor and six misdemeanor counts of contributing to the unruliness of a child.

Bessie's parents, Ed and Kathleen McCoy, have said they are hopeful the attention can lead to their daughter's safe return home.

The show will include an appeal from Mrs. McCoy to her daughter: “Bessie, you can always come home. The note you left said it would break your heart if you thought you couldn't come home. ... I'll come and get you no matter where you are.”

Anyone with information is asked to call sheriff's Sgt. Mike Thacker at 887-3033 or prosecutor's investigator J.C. Kristanoff at 425-8610.
