Lucasville prison in lockdown after tip on security breach
The Associated Press
LUCASVILLE, Ohio A state maximum-security prison was placed under a lockdown Tuesday so authorities could search for items inmates are forbidden to possess.
Prison spokeswoman Karen Collett said the lockdown at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility began at 3 p.m. after the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction was informed of a possible breach of security.
The lockdown means all inmates are restricted to their cells until further notice so a search for contraband can be conducted, she said. All prison activities have been canceled, and the only time inmates can leave their cells will be when small groups are escorted to the dining hall for meals.
The prison in Scioto County houses approximately 1,400 inmates and is at full capacity, Ms. Collett said. Nine prisoners and one guard were killed there in a 1993 riot.
