Another chapter in their lives

WINNING BASEBALL TEAM

Joe Hayden has fielded a lot of great Midland Redskins teams over the past 30 years. Some featured future superstars such as Barry Larkin and Ken Griffey Jr.

But Mr. Hayden, who was profiled July 10 in Tempo, says, “We never had a team that lost only four games.”

        Until this year.

The Redskins, an age 18-and-under amateur team based in Amelia, finished 66-4. In August the team won its second straight Connie Mack World Series title in Farmington, N.M. Teams managed by Mr. Hayden have won eight such championships altogether and six in the past 10 years.

Mr. Hayden, 69, chairman of the executive committee of Amelia-based Midland Co., uses baseball to teach lessons about hard work, preparation and team work.

“They were a very loose ball club. That made it appear to some people that they weren't as dedicated as the team the year before. (But) when they got on the ball field, they were very cohesive, and they worked like the devil.”
