CAMPAIGN NOTEBOOK
Bandwagon toots horn for Broadway

Friday, October 30, 1998

The people pushing for a new Reds ballpark at Broadway Commons are taking their message to the streets with a van they're calling the Broadway Commons Bandwagon.

The van has a sound system to blare the Broadway fight song as it drives through neighborhoods to spread the word about the Broadway and Reading Road site downtown.

The campaign launched the van Thursday evening.

It will appear at high school football games tonight and throughout neighborhoods through Election Day, Broadway campaign coordinator Melisa Rottinghaus said.

The Broadway campaign is urging a "yes" vote on Issue 11, which asks voters to create a county charter requiring that any new Reds ballpark be built at Broadway.

Hamilton County and the Reds have a deal to build a ballpark on a riverfront site next to the Crown, known as Baseball on Main or the "Wedge."

The pro-riverfront campaign is urging a "no" vote on Issue 11, which is an endorsement of the riverfront site.

The city of Cincinnati's Riverfront Advisory Council has voted to endorse the riverfront as the best location for a Reds ballpark. The council, an advisory group to the city planning commission and the city's Economic Development Department, voted 7-4 in favor of the riverfront site, said Steven Kurtz, a city planning department administrator who staffs the council.

Campaign Notebook is compiled by the staff of The Cincinnati Enquirer.
