CAMPAIGN NOTEBOOK
Web site for voters

Tuesday, October 27, 1998

The League of Women Voters has launched a Web site where Hamilton County voters can find their polling place, receive a sample ballot and in most cases print out a map to the polls.

The address is www.smartvoter.org

The site was developed with technical support from Smart Voter, a Silicon Valley-based company, said Michelle Croyle, a league member.

The League's national office chose five states for pilot sites this year, and Ohio is one. It supplied about $15,000 to help the local League create the site, Ms. Croyle said.

The site includes information on statewide candidates and issues. Polling information is for Hamilton County only.

Support for riverfront:

Backers of a new Reds ballpark on the riverfront received support Monday from two groups, including neighbors of the site where opponents want a stadium.

The Over-the-Rhine Community Council and the Greater Cincinnati African American Chamber of Commerce endorsed a "no" vote on Issue 11, the Hamilton County Charter amendment that would require any new ballpark be built at Broadway Commons.

Broadway Commons, at Broadway and Reading Road, is adjacent to Cincinnati's Over-the-Rhine neighborhood.

New ad tactic:

Ohio Senate candidate Mark Mallory, a Cincinnati Democrat, is highlighting the votes his opponent has missed in a new radio commercial known as "Ohio's Unsolved Mysteries."

With spooky music as the backdrop, the announcer explains that incumbent Sen. Janet Howard, R-Forest Park, has missed more than 70 votes during her four-year term. Listeners are urged to ask her about her absences, if they can find her.

The state Senate race is considered one of the most competitive legislative contests this year. Ms. Howard is in the midst of a TV blitz that criticizes Mr. Mallory and features Treasurer Ken Blackwell urging voters to support her.

Campaign Notebook is compiled by the staff of The Cincinnati Enquirer and runs Tuesday-Saturday.
