Woman, 61, hurt in hit-and-run

Tuesday, October 27, 1998

It will be a while before Janice Redmoan gets back to her crossing-guard duties in Northside.

The 61-year-old is recovering from injuries she suffered in a hit-and-run accident early Sunday when she was off-duty and struck while crossing the street.

She was leaving a relative's house about 1:30 a.m. when she was hit by a pickup at the corner of Cooper and Apple streets in Northside. The truck was described as a late-'80s beige-and-brown Dodge. It hit Ms. Redmoan and Rebecca Meyer, 26, of Colerain Township. Ms. Meyer was treated at University Hospital for minor injuries and released.

Ms. Redmoan was in fair condition Monday at Good Samaritan Hospital with a broken leg, broken arm, punctured lung and fractured ribs. She has been a crossing guard since 1971.

Anyone with information about the hit-and-run accident is asked to call Cincinnati District 5 police at 352-3578.

SCPA kitchen fire causes $400 damage

The School for Creative and Performing Arts survived a fire scare Monday with only $400 damage.

That came as relief for the Over-the-Rhine school, whose auditorium had to be rebuilt after a 1996 arson.

This time, the blaze was small, confined to the kitchen, where the fire started in a light fixture. Students, who were evacuated about 8 a.m. Monday, returned to class soon after fire and health department officials inspected the building.

Wesselman Road reopens today

GREEN TOWNSHIP -- Wesselman Road, between Ebenezer and Rybolt roads, will reopen at 7 a.m. today, according to the Hamilton County engineer's office. The road was closed so a new waterline serving the Veterans Park lodge could be installed.

2 face charges of sex with girl, 13

Two men face felony charges of corruption of a minor after allegedly engaging in sexual conduct with a 13-year-old girl.

Sharonville police arrested Daniel Fitzgerald, 19, of Lincoln Heights and Arthur Woods, 26, of Woodlawn early Monday after finding the girl naked in the bathroom of their Motel 6 room in Sharonville. Mr. Woods also faces charges of tampering with evidence and drug abuse. Police also reported finding methamphetamine, an illegal stimulant, in the room.

The men are to be arraigned today in Hamilton County Municipal Court.

Services set for Bond Hill woman

As homicide detectives work to solve her death, Laquitta Elliott's family is preparing to remember her life with services this week locally and in Springfield, Ohio.

Ms. Elliott's decomposed body was found Friday in her Bond Hill apartment. The Hamilton County coroner's office ruled it a homicide, but police have not disclosed details of her death.

Visitation will be 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Thompson, Hall & Jordan Funeral Home, 2625 Gilbert Ave., Walnut Hills, with the funeral at 7 p.m.

Family and friends also may attend visitation from 11 a.m. to noon Friday, with a funeral service at noon, at Phillips Chapel CME Church, 230 Fair St., Springfield. Burial will follow at Fern Cliff Cemetery.

Statement allowed in murder trial

When Charles Williams' murder trial begins in January, the jury will hear the statement he gave police hours after he brought his injured daughter to the hospital.

Judge John O'Connor of Hamilton County Common Pleas Court decided Monday to allow prosecutors to use the taped statement, in which Mr. Williams said his 11-month-old daughter stopped breathing after he gave her "a hug." Later, he said, he tried to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation by "patting" on her chest.

Defense attorneys had sought to exclude the tape, arguing that Mr. Williams had a hearing impairment and could not understand police when they read him his rights.

Prosecutors say Mr. Williams severely beat his daughter, Cassie, who died nine days later. If convicted, Mr. Williams could face a death sentence.

Holiday tree donation sought

The downtown council is looking for a donated majestic spruce to decorate Fountain Square for the holiday season. It will be lighted during council's annual holiday ceremony, Light Up the Square, on Nov. 27.

The tree will be professionally removed at no cost to the homeowner and replanted in an area park following the holiday season.

Requirements for the tree are:

A blue or green spruce 30 feet tall (short-needle variety). The tree should be in a front yard, accessible by crane. It should not be near electrical wires or utility lines.

For more information, call Todd Bucher at 579-3197.
