CAMPAIGN NOTEBOOK
Poll: Voinovich comfortably ahead

Friday, October 9, 1998

A new statewide poll in the U.S. Senate race has Republican George Voinovich holding a huge lead over Democrat Mary Boyle, but, curiously, the Democrat is doing best in the most Republican parts of the state.

The poll, done for the Ohio News Network (ONN) by Mason-Dixon Political - Media Research Inc., shows Mr. Voinovich with 54 percent, Ms. Boyle with 35 percent and 11 percent undecided.

But among voters in the Cincinnati metropolitan area, Mr. Voinovich's lead shrinks to 11 percentage points, with Mr. Voinovich at 51 percent and Ms. Boyle at 40 percent.

In Columbus, another Republican stronghold, Ms. Boyle takes 39 percent to the Republican's 53 percent.

The poll was conducted Oct. 2 through Oct. 5 among 805 registered voters. For statewide totals, the poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

The new ONN poll also showed that, in the Ohio attorney general's race, Republican incumbent Betty Montgomery has a substantial lead over Democratic challenger Richard Cordray, with 53 percent for Ms. Montgomery and 27 percent for Mr. Cordray.

The Campaign Notebook is compiled by staff of The Cincinnati Enquirer and runs Tuesday-Saturday.
