After hitting two more home runs Wednesday night, St. Louis slugger Mark McGwire will enter a three-game series with the Reds this weekend needing just three to break the single season record of 61.
"It's crunch time -- time to make history," McGwire said after hitting two homers against the Florida Marlins for the second night in a row.
That time could be this weekend in St. Louis or next Wednesday or Thursday in Cincinnati when McGwire and the Cardinals come to Cinergy Field for a two-game series.
McGwire is closing fast on Roger Maris' 37-year-old record. He's getting a push from Chicago's Sammy Sosa, who hit his 57th homer Wednesday against the Reds in Wrigley Field.
"When I got to 50, I began to think about the record," McGwire said. "Sammy's a September player, so you have to watch out for him.
And that raises a question on many minds these days: What would you do if you caught The Ball -- the record-breaking 62nd home run? Return it to the hitter? Sell it for a million dollars? Keep it on a shelf?
Columnist Tim Sullivan writes today that such decisions are not as easy as they were in simpler times. And he weighs what he would do. The Enquirer would like your responses, too.
