University Hospital has expanded its Heart ER concept into a larger-scale "rapid diagnosis and treatment center."
Previously, patients at the Heart ER would stay for several hours, but rarely overnight, for testing to determine whether those with chest pains were actually suffering heart attacks. This week, the hospital reorganized its emergency services to speed up testing and treatment for several more conditions, including asthma, abdominal pain, congestive heart failure, carbon monoxide poisoning, dehydration, kidney stones and pneumonia. Instead of being admitted to the hospital, patients are expected to stay in the rapid testing and treatment unit for eight to 12 hours, but no longer than 23 hours.
