Wales swims to silver medal

Saturday, August 15, 1998

BY KELLIE TAYLOR
The Cincinnati Enquirer

St. Xavier grad Dod Wales claimed the silver medal at the U.S. Swimming Championships in Fresno, Calif., on Friday.

Wales' career-best time of 53.64 earned the senior-to-be a spot in next July's PANPAC competition, the world's third-biggest swimming event (behind the Olympics and World Championships), held in Sydney, Australia.

"Coming into the meet, I felt I could definitely finish in the top two," Wales said. "I felt very confident. I think other people were more surprised in my win than I was."

Wales' time was more than a second better than his previous best time.

First place went Auburn University's Brock Neumann.
