ELMWOOD PLACE -- A blaze Friday was the third in 18 months at Omaha Paper Stock, and the company won't be allowed to operate again until further safety precautions are studied, the Elmwood fire chief said.
"By far, this is the most serious," said Terry Zimmerman, Elmwood Place fire chief.
No one was injured, but five fire departments helped Elmwood Place put out the fire at 5636 Vine St.
There was no damage estimate late Friday, and the cause was still under investigation, Chief Zimmerman said.
The fire appeared to have started outside the company that shreds corrugated board and paper and then sends it off to be recycled. Omaha Paper Stock's sprinkler system on an outside wall kept the fire outside of the building, Chief Zimmerman said.
The fire was reported at 2:20 p.m., and fire crews worked into the night to spread out the debris and extinguish hot spots.
"There are bails of cardboard that are very compacted," Chief Zimmerman said.
Two earlier fires at the business were not so serious, he said. Spontaneous combustion caused the first fire outside the building. The second fire involved a machine that shuttles the corrugated board outside the building to the inside, Chief Zimmerman said.
