SPRINGDALE -- Rising temperatures on asphalt led to rising dough on Interstate 275 Thursday morning.

An inch-high covering of dough smeared a 100-yard stretch of the left lane of eastbound I-275, near the Springdale exit.

The dough spilled from a truck before 8 a.m., said Chris Bateman of the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT). The spill and cleanup backed up traffic for three miles.

"We got out here, and there was liquid all over the place," said Chris Steagall, an ODOT crew member. "Then it started rising, and we all were staring and laughing. It was hilarious."

No one knows who spilled the dough, which shut down one lane of the highway the entire day.

Procter & Gamble Co. was called to clean the spill, and nearly 25 gallons of Dawn dishwashing liquid and a heavy-duty scraper were needed for the cleanup.

An animal-fat spill in April took 4 tons of soap to clean up the mess.

"This definitely is something we've had to deal with before, but you don't expect it to happen this much," said Damon Jones, supervisor of corporate communications for Procter & Gamble. "It's going to take some time to get this off the road, because it won't be safe with this grease all over the place."
