Cleveland cop killer identified

Saturday, July 4, 1998

CLEVELAND -- A 19-year-old Florida man was identified Friday as the person who fatally shot an officer and then was killed by police, authorities said.

Correy Major, 19, of Fort Myers, Fla., shot Officer Robert Clark while he was pursued by the policeman and two other officers Wednesday night, police Sgt. Mark Hastings said.

The officers began chasing Mr. Major because they believed he was involved in a drug deal in front of an apartment building. Officers Clark and Raymond Diaz caught Mr. Major at the top of a staircase in the building and found what appeared to be drugs while searching him.

Mr. Major then pushed Officers Clark and Diaz down the stairs, took out a 9mm handgun and began firing, police said. Officer Clark was hit four times.

The third officer, Keith Haven, pulled Officer Diaz out of the building and returned fire, killing Mr. Major.

Sgt. Hastings said authorities in Lee County, Fla., had issued several arrest warrants for Mr. Major for charges that included robbery and resisting arrest.

A funeral for Officer Clark, 36, will be held Tuesday at Our Lady of Angels Church in Rocky River, Sgt. Hastings said. Officer Clark will be buried at Sunset Memorial Park in Olmsted Township.
