The Cincinnati Enquirer won 20 awards in the annual Ohio Excellence in Journalism Awards sponsored by the Cleveland Press Club.
Enquirer staffers collected seven first-place honors including best sports section and best editorial page among Ohio's daily newspapers. The newspaper was runner-up to the Columbus Dispatch for overall general excellence.
The news staff captured the first- and second-place awards in breaking news for its coverage of the 1997 flood and the crash of Comair Flight 3272, respectively.
Other first-place awards:
- Column: Cliff Radel for "The Awe and the Agony."
- Editorial: Linda Cagnetti for "Report Card Stew."
- Sports commentary: Paul Daugherty for "Pete Rose Jr."
- Spot news photo: Gary Landers for "In the Middle."
The staff's flood coverage and Mr. Radel's columns also received first-place honors in the recent Associated Press Society of Ohio competition. The two competitions are the largest and most prestigious among Ohio newspapers.

Computer-assisted report: Mark Skertic, "Home Income."
Reporter Ben L. Kaufman received honorable mention for his obituary of longtime Procter & Gamble executive Robert Norrish.
The Enquirer's web site received honorable mention.
