Gunman, Flynt in close proximity

Friday, May 1, 1998

BY DANA DiFILIPPO
The Cincinnati Enquirer

For about 30 minutes Thursday, Larry Flynt and the man who admitted firing the shots that paralyzed the Hustler publisher 20 years ago were in the same jail.

Mr. Flynt was taken to the Hamilton County Justice Center to be fingerprinted and photographed on obscenity charges stemming from adult video sales at his downtown Hustler bookstore.

Joseph Paul Franklin, an avowed racist and serial killer, was in jail after being brought to Cincinnati last weekend to face charges that he killed Dante Evans Brown, 13, and Darrell Lane, 14, as they walked along Reading Road in Bond Hill in 1980. He has confessed to shooting Mr. Flynt but was never tried.

Mr. Flynt said the coincidence didn't bother him. "I never really give it much thought," he said.

But the irony wasn't lost on his brother Jimmy Flynt. "Sounds a little too coincidental," he said.
