April was soggiest ever for Tristate

Friday, May 1, 1998

April set a new record for rainfall in Greater Cincinnati, and May is starting out the same way -- rain is in the forecast.

The National Weather Service (NWS) recorded 9.77 inches of rain in the region as of 5 p.m. Thursday for April, making it the wettest April on record, said Diane Innes, an NWS meteorologist. Records date to 1835.

Rainfall this April -- expected to go higher with rain forecast for Thursday night -- topped a 51-year-old record of 8.62 inches set in 1947. A normal April has about 3.36 inches of rain.

Tax protesters free after signing bonds

A father and his two sons, charged with tax fraud conspiracy and failing to file their returns, were free Thursday after reconsidering their refusal to cooperate with the federal court.

Edgar F. Bradley, 66, of 6532 Dawson Road, Madeira, was freed Wednesday when he changed his mind after two days in the Hamilton County Justice Center and signed his bond.

Edgar F. Bradley II, 40, of 1279 Ida St., Mount Adams, and Roy Bradley, 35, of 10650 Crescendo Court, Montgomery, were released Thursday after agreeing to be fingerprinted and photographed by the U.S. Marshals Service and to sign bond forms.

Magistrate Judge Jack Sherman Jr. let them go on their promise to return to court or forfeit $10,000. He also entered not guilty pleas for all three when they refused to plead.

The Bradleys will be tried this summer before U.S. District Judge Herman J. Weber.

Delta Queen docks here this morning

The Delta Queen, one of the last authentic steamboats in existence, will dock for its 51st homecoming today at the Cincinnati Public Landing, 1 Broadway

The 285-foot, four-level paddlewheeler should make its way along the Ohio River to its home port between 6 and 8 a.m., officials said. It will be there until 6 p.m.

Officials with the Delta Queen Steamboat Co. and the Greater Cincinnati Tall Stacks Commission will have a news conference on board at 10 a.m. to announce Tall Stacks dates, plans and details. Officials are also expected to introduce the 1999 logo.

Spectators are welcome to view the Delta Queen, but the Tall Stacks announcement is for the press, said Maria Hegge Burquest, marketing director for the Tall Stacks Commission.

5 stores accused of underage alcohol sales

MIAMI TOWNSHIP -- Five employees of retail outlets in Clermont County have been arrested by township police and charged with selling alcoholic beverages to persons under 21.

The arrests occurred at the BP station at 798 Ohio 28; Dairy Mart, 1265 Woodville Pike; Wine Connection, 1258 Ohio 28; Speedway, 1143 Ohio 131, and United Dairy Farmers, 469 Wards Corner Road. They were the result of a crackdown on illegal sales of alcoholic beverages. Police used 18-year-olds to test local retailers for compliance with the law, which requires that buyers be at least 21. The operation was conducted after police made a large number of arrests of youths in possession of alcoholic beverages, Detective Mike Henderson said.

$80,000 bond for woman in robbery

Bond is set at $80,000 cash for the Cincinnati police officer's roommate who allegedly took off with the officer's gun, badge and personal car after a domestic dispute Tuesday.

Tracey Blount, 35, of Price Hill is being held at the Hamilton County Justice Center, charged with felony domestic violence, aggravated robbery, auto theft and theft.

She is accused of punching off-duty District 1 Officer Lawana Barber in the face at their Autumn Woods Apartment in Price Hill, threatening to kill her and fleeing with her Smith & Wesson 9mm service pistol, badge and car.

Officer Barber was not seriously injured.
