UC Notebook: Special teams hurt

The Bearcats' special teams play hurt them Saturday.

Punter Chet Ervin averaged just 31.4 yards a kick. For the most part, UC kickoffs barely made it to the 20-yard line. Several times, kick returners tried to take the ball out of the end zone and got stopped short of the 20.

And Jonathan Ruffin missed a few kicks.

Just last week, the senior kicker set a school record for consecutive extra points made with 65 (the previous record was 63).

His streak ended less than five minutes into the game when he was wide right on the point after the Bearcats' first touchdown.

Ruffin had not missed a PAT since a game at Wisconsin two years ago, and he is 93-of-97 in his career.

“I've got to miss sometime,” Ruffin said.

In the second quarter, he hit a career-long 49 yarder.

MOVIN' ON UP: DeMarco McCleskey scored on a 1-yard TD run in the first quarter, putting him third on UC's rushing (25) and career touchdown lists (27).

McCleskey had a 46-yard run in the first quarter, but otherwise had just 23 yards on his other 12 carries.

TWO-YEAR WAIT: The four-game OSU-Cincinnati contract continues with meetings at Ohio Stadium in Columbus in 2004 and 2006.

“I'm not in charge of scheduling, but I thought it was great,” OSU coach Jim Tressel said. “It sure beats traveling 2,000 miles to play.”

UP NEXT: UC travels to Philadelphia for a nonconference game at Temple. The Buckeyes begin Big Ten play at home against Indiana.

NOTEWORTHY: UC quarterback Gino Guidugli attempted a career-high 52 passes. The sophomore had his fifth career 300-yard game.
