UC signee little help in finding shooter

By Neil Schmidt nschmidt@enquirer.com
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Greensboro, N.C., police say University of Cincinnati basketball signee Eric Hicks is not cooperating in the investigation of who shot him early Monday, but Hicks' brother said Hicks simply doesn't know who the shooter was.

Hicks, a 6-foot-7, 230-pound forward from Greensboro Dudley High, was shot in the left leg during a feud at a Greensboro park just after 1a.m. Monday.

No arrests have been made. Greensboro police detective Graham Farrell said Hicks would not give much information.

Said Derrick Hicks, Eric's brother: “It wasn't that he didn't cooperate. He just said he didn't know who shot him. He said (the police) were trying to persuade him to name someone, but he said, "I'm not going to get up in a court of law and convict somebody who might be innocent.'”

Without Hicks, or other witnesses who could describe a suspect, police are having difficulty piecing together the events.

Derrick Hicks said his brother put himself in the middle of a feud between Dudley students, thinking he had enough clout to bring a quick end to it.

“He's broke up fights before in the past,” Derrick Hicks said. “This time it just backfired. He took a bullet that wasn't even meant for him.”

The bullet went through Hicks' calf, so he escaped serious injury and should be able to resume playing within two to four weeks. He was scheduled to leave Monday for summer-session classes at UC, but his departure is delayed at least a week.

“His health is more important than anything,” Derrick Hicks said. “If he can't go up this weekend, he'll just wait for the (second summer) session.”
