Juco guard could take Logan's place

When the University of Cincinnati looks to replace Steve Logan's scoring next season, one of the players expected to help right away is Tony Bobbitt. The 6-foot-3 shooting guard from the College of Southern Idaho has signed his national letter of intent to attend UC.

Van Coleman of FutureStars calls Bobbitt one of the three best junior-college offensive players in the country.

“I think he is an impact talent,” Coleman said.

“We look for Tony to come in and make an immediate contribution,” Bearcats coach Bob Huggins said. “He is a great shooter, and he brings good size and athletic ability to the guard spot.”

Bobbitt averaged 17.8 points, 4.8 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 3.9 steals a game, and shot .394 from 3-point range (110-of-279) this season. He was selected first-team All-Scenic West.

He was fourth in the conference in scoring and assists and third in free throw percentage (.818). He led the league and was second in the nation in steals. Southern Idaho finished 26-6.

UC's other signed recruits — 6-2 guard Chadd Moore (61), 6-6 forward Eric Hicks (88) and 6-8 guard Armein Kirkland (96) — all are rated in the top 100 in ESPN.com's most recent rankings of high school seniors.

Kareem Johnson, a 6-8 center from Chipola Junior College, is scheduled to make an official recruiting visit to UC this weekend.

“He's a pretty good player,” Coleman said. “He's got a good set of hands. He finishes around the basket. He uses his body well to rebound. He's a guy who could come in and give some quality minutes, could even be a starter at the Cincinnati level.”

Bobbitt's signing puts UC at least among the country's top 20 classes, Coleman said, adding that if UC signs Johnson, its class could end up in his top 15.
