CUSA drops Motor City, adds New Orleans Bowl

Conference USA ended its relationship with the Motor City Bowl Thursday by announcing a four-year deal with the New Orleans Bowl.

The second annual New Orleans Bowl will be Dec.17 at the Louisiana Superdome. The game will be played between a team from CUSA and the Sun Belt Conference and will be televised on ESPN2.

CUSA will have four bowl tie-ins for the 2002 season. The other three are the Liberty Bowl in Memphis, Tenn.; the GMAC Bowl in Mobile, Ala., and the Houston Bowl. The CUSA champion will play in the Liberty Bowl. After that, the league's goal is to place teams in regional bowls so fans can more easily attend games, CUSA commissioner Mike Slive said.

The University of Cincinnati has played in the last two Motor City Bowl games, at the Pontiac Silverdome in Pontiac, Mich.

CUSA member Tulane in New Orleans, and five other conference schools are within 500 miles of the city. Cincinnati is 800 miles away.

“I'd think with our fans going to the last two bowl games, they would be excited to make a trip to a warm-weather and more entertaining city,” Bearcats coach Rick Minter said.
