The first of Steve Logan's All-America honors has arrived. The University of Cincinnati senior was named first-team All-America by the National Association of Basketball Coaches, joining Jason Williams and Mike Dunleavy (both of Duke), Juan Dixon (Maryland) and Drew Gooden (Kansas).
Kentucky's Tayshaun Prince was named to the second team and Xavier's David West third team.
UC's Bob Huggins was named the District 10 Coach of the Year after leading the Bearcats to a 27-3 record.
Logan is among ESPN magazine'sthree finalists for National Player of the Year, along with Gooden and Williams. Logan, Williams and Gonzaga's Dan Dickau are the finalists for Point Guard of the Year.
MORE HONORS:
Immanuel McElroy is expected to be named Conference USA's Defensive Player of the Year today. The 6-foot-4 wing has been asked to guard opposing teams' best players throughout most of the season and has often been successful in shutting them down.
Jason Maxiell, a 6-7 forward,is expected to be named to the league's All-Freshman Team and also be selected as the Sixth Player of the Year. Maxiell has come off the bench in 27 of 30 games and averaged 8.1 points and 6.7 rebounds.
Logan was named first-team all-league Monday for the second straight year, along with Reece Gaines (Louisville), Jobey Thomas (Charlotte), Dwyane Wade (Marquette), Dajuan Wagner and Kelly Wise (both of Memphis). Leonard Stokes, UC's No. 2 scorer (11.9 ppg), was named third-team.
HIT THAT OCEAN:
Huggins said that he's not worried about the woes of his top long-range shooters. Logan is just 5-of-23 (.217) on 3-pointers over the last three games. Field Williams went 1-of-8 against Memphis and Louisville. Stokes is 0-of-4 in the last three games. The Bearcats went 0-of-16 from behind the 3-point line Sunday against Memphis.
I've got to start knocking those 3s in, Logan said. We can't win like this all the time.
Said Huggins: I think those kind of things go in cycles. We've got guys that shoot it too well to shoot it as poorly as we've shot it that long.
Field Williams has shot it miserable of late and he's really, really a good shooter, and Logan's really a good shooter. And I think Stokes is a capable shooter. We just hopefully this week will break out of it and make some shots.
