Steve Logan's offense is a given. The University of Cincinnati senior guard has scored in double figures 40 consecutive games. Even when he is not shooting the ball well, he has a knack for picking up points at the foul line. After that, the fourth-ranked Bearcats have struggled to find consistent offensive support throughout their 18-game winning streak.
Tuesday night's 54-50 victory at Saint Louis highlighted that. It was just the second game in which UC had only one player score in double figures; Logan had 25 points. (The other game was Duquesne when no Bearcats played more than 26 minutes.)
When we actually run what we've designed, it will surprise the (heck) out of everybody, because we haven't run it yet all year, UC coach Bob Huggins said.
Pete (UC assistant coach Dan Peters) did a great job and put some things together that combine pretty much the good things that we've done for the last 13 years, and we haven't got into it once. We just kind of run around out there.
Cincinnati has had at least three players score in double figures 15 of 19 games.
Junior Leonard Stokes, UC's No.2 scorer, has been in double digits 12 times. He was 3-of-7 from the field with nine points against the Billikens.
Senior Immanuel McElroy, who is often guarding the opponent's best player, has scored 10 or more just seven times. Ditto for senior Jamaal Davis.
Another game-by-game variable is junior center Donald Little, who has six double-digit scoring games and six double-digit rebounding efforts.
Little averaged 12.3 points and 10.3 rebounds over a four-game stretch from Dec.29 to Jan.12. Since then, he has averaged just 2.0 points and 5.3 rebounds and watched his minutes decrease to 19.3 a game (from 24.1).
The Bearcats have not been getting much offense inside, which puts more pressure on the perimeter players. Starters Davis and Little together scored 11 points against DePaul, 10 against Louisville and seven against Saint Louis. They combine to average 15.4.
It's not just Donald, Huggins said. It's anybody we've put in there. I think they've got to work a whole lot harder in practice.
Freshman Jason Maxiell, who comes off the bench, has averaged 7.3 points and 9.3 rebounds in 22 minutes over the past three games. He grabbed 14 rebounds against Saint Louis, one short of his career high.
Since Dec.29, Maxiell has averaged 9.7 points and 9.3 rebounds and shot 60.9 percent from the field. He has started the second half in each of the past two games.
We're going to play people who we think are best-suited to helping us win, Huggins said.
