UC, Minter 'very close' to contract extension

University of Cincinnati football coach Rick Minter, already the longest-tenured coach in program history, is close to agreeing to a contract extension.

Minter, who led the Bearcats to a 7-5 record and a second straight Motor City Bowl appearance last season, has one year left on his current contract.

Minter began meeting with athletic director Bob Goin about an extension after the regular season ended Dec.1 but before the Dec.29 Motor City Bowl, UC associate sports information director Brian McCann said Tuesday.

“It's very close to being finished,” McCann said.

Goin, who was in Florida attending the Conference USA meetings, declined comment until the contract has been finalized. Minter was on the road recruiting.

“I'm not sure when it's going to be done,” Minter said in a statement. “Now is a busy time with recruiting wrapping up in two weeks and hiring part of a staff. I'm excited about the future of Bearcat football and I'm looking forward to being the head coach here for a long time.”

Minter, 47, was hired Dec.18, 1993, after Tim Murphy left to become the head coach at Harvard. Minter's eight-year record is 41-49. He ranks second in UC coaching victories to Sid Gillman, who was 50-13-1 in the late 1940s and early '50s.

Minter is in the market for four assistant coaches. Offensive coordinator Dave Baldwin left after last season for Baylor. Minter did not renew the contracts of receivers coach Tyrone Dixon, linebackers coach Andy Hendel and defensive line coach O'Neill Gilbert.
