UC Notebook
Maxiell fills in just fine
By Michael Perry
The Cincinnati Enquirer
GREENVILLE, N.C. Jason Maxiell was rushed into service just 2:25 into Saturday night's game when UC's starting power forward, Jamaal Davis, was called for his second personal foul.
And the freshman forward gave the Bearcats a boost for the second straight game. He finished with 12 points all in the first half and nine rebounds in Cincinnati's 72-62 victory over East Carolina.
Maxiell is coming off a career-high 16 points Dec.29 against Akron in Cleveland. He is a combined 13-of-14 from the field over the past two games.
STOKES WOES: Leonard Stokes' struggles continued despite a talk with former UC great Oscar Robertson earlier in the week. He was 1-of-4 shooting from the field with a season-low three points. Stokes has scored in single digits five straight games.
THIS AND THAT: Donald Little blocked three shots and passed Robert Miller for fourth place on UC's all-time list with 119. ... UC has won eight straight league openers; its last loss was Jan.9, 1994, against UAB at Shoemaker (67-65) in the Great Midwest Conference. ... Cincinnati was the highest-rated team to play in Greenville since December 1969. The Bearcats were the first ranked opponent at Minges Coliseum since December 1986 and East Carolina's first ranked opponent overall since March 1993.
RECRUITING NEWS: In his first game after orally committing to UC, Tony Bobbitt tied his own school record of eight 3-pointers and scored 26 points to lead the College of Southern Idaho to victory Friday night. ... On Wednesday night, Eric Hicks of Greensboro (N.C.) Dudley High School had 48 points and 12 rebounds in a 93-57 victory over Morehead.
IN THE CLASSROOM: UC had seven players (Little, Leonard Stokes, Rod Flowers, Field Williams, Maxiell, Jamaal Lucas, John Meeker) with grade-point averages of 3.0 or better in the fall quarter, earning Bearcat Scholar honors. The team GPA was 2.9.
UP NEXT: UC plays host to Conference USA American Division rival Charlotte at 8:05 p.m. Tuesday at Shoemaker Center.
