No time for UC to bask in glory

Crosstown Shootout victors prepare for Richmond

By Michael Perry
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Bob Huggins' celebration was brief. About 2 1/2 hours after the University of Cincinnati's 75-55 victory over Xavier on Friday night, the Bearcats coach was in his Shoemaker Center office watching film of Richmond, Monday's opponent.

He didn't go home until 4:30 a.m. Saturday.

“I didn't know anything about Richmond,” Huggins said. “I didn't know their personnel. I didn't know what they ran. I didn't know anything. It's hard, then, for me to come in and have practice if I don't know what I'm supposed to do.”

By noon Saturday, the UC players were lifting weights, then learning about Richmond, then on the court practicing.

One of the challenges of any hard-earned emotional victory is putting it behind and getting ready for the next task.

“That's what great teams do,” UC senior Steve Logan said. “They get a win and take a couple steps forward, not backward.”

The Bearcats are 9-3 under Huggins in games following the Crosstown Shootout. The last time they lost one of those was in January 1996 (to UAB). All the defeats came on the road.

Having a lot of veterans — 10 total seniors and juniors — means UC should be less likely to linger in the glory of its most lopsided victory over the Musketeers in 37 seasons.

“It's over with,” junior Leonard Stokes said. “It was good while it lasted, but we know we've got a tough game on Monday.”

Said Huggins: “The most important game's the next one. My older guys, I hope they understand what's at stake. This is a bunch that didn't do that very well a year ago and paid the price for it. (They) didn't come to play every day, didn't prepare to win every day.”
