Make no mistake, Steve Logan loves to score. But the University of Cincinnati senior got just as much satisfaction from passing the ball Saturday in the Bearcats' 90-39 victory over Coppin State.
The 6-foot senior from Cleveland collected his first career double-double with 15 points and a single-game school-record 16 assists.
Logan did it with alley-oops and no-look passes. He fed teammates on the run toward the basket and set up on the perimeter. He did it with Oscar Robertson now No.3 on the all-time single-game assist list (13) watching from his courtside seat.
I came out and got guys the ball that were open and played with a lot of passion, Logan said. I had fun out there today. It was a great honor to get 16. Everybody knows me from scoring. I wanted to just go out and let my teammates have some fun and show them that I appreciate them.
Junior Leonard Stokes described one of Logan's assists kind of a wrap-around, behind-his-back to Donald Little as Magic Johnson or something like that.
They're trying to take so much away from him, it leaves other guys open, Stokes said. I've been playing with him for so long that I know when it's coming. He'll look, then he'll look away. When he looks away I know to be ready. Like the first couple (assists), I was under the basket and I knew if I was open he'd deliver the ball to me.
Stokes was right.
Late in the first half, Logan stole the ball and had a breakaway layup, but he gave it up to Little for a dunk.
I thought he was really unselfish, UC coach Bob Huggins said. He really tried to get our other guys in the game.
Logan had six assists at halftime he may have even had a couple more that were not recorded and was told the record was 15. He got in a zone passing.
His last three assists came on 3-pointers by Field Williams. When play stopped with 6:07 remaining, Logan rushed over and hugged Williams, then went to the bench for the rest of the game, waving his arms to the crowd and stopping to hug Huggins along the way.
I told him, just give me the ball and I'll get you to 16, Williams said. I kind of knew he was two or three away, so I just wanted to hit the open shots. I was happy for him.
UC was coming off final exam week and playing the first of four games over a 10-day period. It had its largest margin of victory since a 106-54 win over Eastern Kentucky on Dec. 20, 1997.
The Bearcats (5-1) won their fifth in a row all at home and again the result was never in doubt.
They led 49-16 at halftime. Coppin State (2-5) shot just 18.2 percent (6 of 33) from the field in the first 20 minutes and 24.6 percent for the game.
That's about all you need to know about that.
Logan's display overshadowed some strong individual performances by his perimeter pals: Stokes (14 points, career-high 10 rebounds, first career double-double) and Immanuel McElroy (10 points, six rebounds, six assists, three steals).
Not to mention:
Freshman Jason Maxiell, who got his first career double-double with 13 points, 15 rebounds and six blocks, all career highs.
Williams, who added a career-high 19 points off the bench.
But it was Logan who stole the show. He also had three steals and finished 4-of-9 from 3-point range, including one from NBA range,
Maybe outside of Nick (Van Exel), Lo's the most skilled guy we've had, Huggins said.
We haven't had guys who can do all the things that he can do. When he wants to, he's our best one-on-one defender. He can play point, he can play off-guard, he can shoot it long, he can penetrate to where he can make shots.
Logan wasn't sure what to say about being mentioned with Van Exel.
Nick's an (NBA) All-Star, and I'm definitely not in the same caliber as he is, Logan said. I don't know too many people who can play like Nick can.
