UC's Guidugli earns C-USA freshman honor

First freshman to win team MVP at UC

The Cincinnati Enquirer

University of Cincinnati quarterback Gino Guidugli, the former Highlands High School standout, was unanimously selected Conference USA freshman of the year.

The award, decided by balloting of C-USA coaches and media, was announced by the league office Thursday.

“Gino was the offensive catalyst for our season, and he is more than deserving of this award,” UC head coach Rick Minter said. “From the moment he first stepped on the practice field in August, he showed the poise and maturity of an upperclassman. His leadership skills were evident by the way the team responded when he was in the game. He is a very special athlete.”

Guidugli, a true freshman, set school and league freshman records for passes (317), completions (185), passing yards (2,573), passing touchdowns (16) and total offense (2,498). He was the first freshman to win UC's Claude Rost Award as most valuable player.

Guidugli is the second Bearcat to be named C-USA's freshman of the year, joining receiver LaDaris Vann, who won in 1999.
