Injury hits UC guard
McElroy's foot to be tested for possible fracture
By Michael Perry
The Cincinnati Enquirer
University of Cincinnati senior Immanuel McElroy injured the fifth metatarsal bone on his left foot near the end of Thursday's practice and will find out today how serious the injury is.
X-rays taken at Shoemaker Center were inconclusive. McElroy was scheduled to be X-rayed again today at the office of team orthopedic surgeon Dr. Angelo Colosimo.
It is not an obvious fracture at this point, athletic trainer Jayd Grossman said. (Today) we go to define whether or not there's a crack in the bone, which would be basically an acute stress fracture or a full fracture that just didn't show up on what we did (Thursday).
Right now we're 75 percent sure it's OK. We have to take it one step further and make sure that he didn't crack it.
McElroy, who left Shoemaker on crutches, told Grossman he landed on another player's foot.
It's the exact same thing that happened to (former Bearcat) Antwan Jones, Grossman said.
The best-case scenario is that McElroy suffered a bruise. Then he'd be day-to-day.
Worst case? A full fracture that could require a screw. Then McElroy would be out anywhere from four to eight weeks.
McElroy started 24 of 35 games last season and averaged 7.0 points and 3.3 rebounds. He was expected to be one of UC's primary offensive players this season.
Junior center Derek Hollman has been limited in practice this week because of a sore shoulder. He did not participate Thursday in physical activities. He said he hurt himself on the first day of practice diving for a ball.
It popped out, he said of his shoulder.
The 6-foot-10 Hollman has been wearing a harness to try and keep the shoulder in place.
I hurt it about a year ago in a basketball game, Hollman said. It was dislocated. I was going up for a rebound and somebody snatched my arm all the way back, and it just popped out and stayed out. It wasn't really bothering me last season. As time passed, it went away.
It's really frustrating. I worked so hard to get here. Now this is holding me back.
Said Grossman: What he's having now is kind of a reaction to three to four hours of practice five days in a row at this level. He's not used to lifting weights and conditioning and doing individual (workouts) for three weeks straight, and then on the heels of that coming in and going four hours against other 240-pound people. He's just never had to do that.
