Antwan Jones is officially gone from the University of Cincinnati basketball program.
Jones, a 6-foot-7 forward, is enrolled at Georgetown (Ky.) College. Georgetown is an NAIA school, so Jones will be eligible for the 2001-02 season. He would have had to sit out a season to play at an NCAA Division I school.
He'll step in and play for us right away, Georgetown coach Happy Osborne said. He's a very good player.
Jones averaged 5.3 points and 2.4 rebounds a game for UC last season.
He was considered the prize of UC's recruiting class after being named a second-team All-American at Tallahassee (Fla.) Community College after the 1999-2000 season. But he was slowed by foot surgery and never contributed on a regular basis.
He left the team for six days in January but returned. He played in 32 games, averaging 13.9 minutes.
Jones had not contacted coach Bob Huggins after the season ended and was not expected to return.
We knew he was available, Osborne said. We've had a lot of Division I kids transfer here. They're usually Kentucky kids we recruited. We say, "If things don't work out, keep us in mind.'
Jones, from Live Oak, Fla., is the second UC player to end up at Georgetown. Jackson Julson (UC 1994-97) also transfered there.
