Huggins to Cavs? Let the speculation begin
By Michael Perry
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Cleveland Cavaliers coach Randy Wittman was fired Thursday, and University of Cincinnati coach Bob Huggins is being mentioned in the media as a potential candidate to succeed Wittman.
Bret Adams, Huggins' Columbus-based lawyer, said Thursday he has not heard from the Cavaliers.
We haven't received a call yet, he said. Bob's still in a great situation. He's still the UC coach. If we get a call, Bob and I will discuss it and respond appropriately.
A March 25 column in the Akron Beacon Journal quoted a source close to Huggins as saying the UC coach would be very interested in the job.
Huggins told the Enquirer a few days later: No one's talked to me. It's crazy. He also asked UC athletic director Bob Goin if the two could discuss a contract extension.
Huggins could not be reached Thursday.
Jim Paxson, the Cavaliers' general manager, said Thursday he would be looking for a candidate with NBA head coaching experience but backed off that when pressed, saying, I'm not going to put myself in a box.
The Beacon Journal reported today that the two leading candidates are former Cavs, Ohio State star Jim Cleamons and Dayton's Johnny Davis.
