UC's Merrill earns track All-America
University of Cincinnati senior Mimi Merrill has become the first UC female track and field athlete to receive All-America recognition.
Merrill placed eighth in the 20-pound weight throw at the NCAA Championships in Fayetteville, Ark., to earn All-America honors.
Merrill threw a distance of 64-1, while Florence Ezeh of Southern Methodist won the national title with a mark of 69-10 1/4.
The honor capped off record setting season for Merrill in the weight throw, breaking her own school record three times, placing first in the event in every meet leading up to the NCAA's and earning Conference USA track and field athlete of the week honors on Feb. 6.
I knew that if she performed like she has all year that she would be an All-American, coach Bill Schnier said. The fact that she improved is a sign of a true champion.
