Best, worst of times for Logan

UC Notebook

By Michael Perry
The Cincinnati Enquirer

LOUISVILLE — One day after being named Conference USA Player of the Year, UC's Steve Logan had his worst outing in two months.

The 6-foot junior scored just 12 points in the Bearcats' 73-70 victory over Alabama-Birmingham.

It was his 16th consecutive game scoring in double figures, but Logan was 4-of-15 from the field and 1-of-5 from 3-point range. He also scored 12 against Saint Louis (Feb.21) but was 5-of-10 from the field in that game.

“I was struggling,” Logan said. “I was rushing things and not playing like myself.”

Logan started 1-of-6 shooting and missed his first three shots. He fouled out for the first time all season with 29.3 seconds left.

“I know he'll have a big game tomorrow,” teammate Kenny Satterfield said. “That's the kind of player he is.”

LEAGUE NEWS: Conference USA expands to 14 teams next season with the addition of East Carolina and Texas Christian University. The effects of that:

        • Divisions: East Carolina will join the American, which includes Cincinnati, and TCU will be in the National. Each division will have seven teams.

        • Schedule: Schools still will play 16 league games, 12 within their division (each team twice) and four from the other division. Two of those will be scheduled on a “systemic rotation,” and the other two will be dictated by the league based on television interest, geography and rivalries. There is a probability, for instance, that UC will play Memphis twice.

        • Tournament: Te C-USA Board of Directors met Wednesday in Louisville and approved a 12-team format for next year's conference tournament, which is at Firstar Center in Cincinnati. Teams with the 12 best C-USA regular-season records — regardless of division — will play in the tournament. Four teams receive first-round byes.
