Huggins lobbies to make Logan MVP

By Michael Perry
The Cincinnati Enquirer

TAMPA, Fla. — UC coach Bob Huggins believes if the Bearcats share the Conference USA regular-season title, junior guard Steve Logan should be the league's player of the year.

“If we can win Saturday (at DePaul), I think there's not any question he is,” Huggins said. “He's done more to carry our team than anybody has.”

Logan scored 31 points Thursday night in UC's 77-66 victory over South Florida. He has 1,096 career points, 29th on UC's career list. Logan passed Brian Williams, Eddie Lee, Bill Westerfeld and Ralph Davis.

MORE SURGERY: UC sophomore center Donald Little, who grabbed 10 rebounds in 25 minutes against USF, said he wasn't even supposed to play because his elbow has been hurting. Little said he will require offseason surgery, similar to what he had when he redshirted in 1998-99.

Little and teammate B.J. Grove, who also had 10 rebounds, helped UC win the battle of the boards 48-39.

“We knew if we rebounded, we'd win the game,” Little said. “I was going and getting them. I didn't think about scoring tonight, just rebounding and blocking shots.”

TOUGH D: South Florida junior forward B.B. Waldon, USF's No. 2 scorer (17.1 ppg), had just one basket in the first 20 minutes — and that came on a goal-tend by Donald Little — and finished with only eight points. Jamaal Davis guarded him most of the night.

USF's Altron Jackson, who averages 19.7 ppg, scored nine of his team-high 17 points in the first half.

SECOND CHANCE: It was late Wednesday night, after the Bearcats flew to Tampa, Fla., and took a bus to their hotel that they found out Memphis and Marquette both lost, giving them an opportunity to win the American Division and a piece of the C-USA regular-season championship.

“It was like they had given us another chance to be first, so we wanted to come out with some fire and some energy and get this game,” Logan said.

HOMETOWN GUYS: Junior Antwan Jones said he was expecting at least two dozen friends and family members in the stands at South Florida. Jones is from Live Oak, Fla. — about two hours away — and played two seasons at Tallahassee (Fla.) Community College.

TICKETS: Today is the final day to buy Conference USA Tournament tickets at the UC Athletic Ticket office (556-CATS). They will be available next week from Louisville, which plays host to the tournament.
