UC Notebook

Williams turns tide with pair of 3s

By Michael Perry
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Cincinnati started Saturday's game 2-of-11 from the field, was clinging to a four-point lead over Houston and needed an offensive spark.

The Cougars went to a zone defense, and in came UC freshman Field Williams, a Houston native who nailed back-to-back 3-pointers.

The second one put the Bearcats ahead 14-4 with 12:31 left in the half. Houston never got closer than seven after that during UC's 85-50 victory.

“It shows what he's made of — against his hometown university,” Houston coach Ray McCallum said. “It got us out of a zone.”

STARTER AGAIN: After coming off the bench for the first time Wednesday night against Saint Louis, junior Jamaal Davis was back in the starting lineup Saturday.

The 6-foot-9 power forward, who had not scored in three straight games, got his first basket since Feb.10 when he hit a mid-range jumper with 15:52 remaining.

Davis got in early foul trouble and finished with four points and two rebounds in 10 minutes.

NOTABLE NUMBERS: Junior Antwan Jones tied his career-high with seven rebounds, all in the first half.

        • UC outrebounded an opponent (40-35) for the first time since Feb.1 at Charlotte.

        • Junior Immanuel McElroy, who scored 12 points, has averaged 14 points on a combined 14-of-23 shooting, 3.7 rebounds and three assists over the past three games.

        • UC had only seven turnovers, the eighth game this season the Bearcats finished in single digits in turnovers.

        • Donald Little failed to block a shot, ending a string of 18 straight games with one.

PEEKING OUT: Football defensive end Antwan Peek said he doesn't know if he will return to the Bearcat basketball team this season.

Peek, who had arthroscopic knee surgery, said football trainers discouraged him from returning.

“I want to come back (to basketball),” Peek said. “But I've been missing a lot of the practices because I've been trying to rehabilitate. I don't want to be kind of like a free-loader. I'd like to come in (to practice) even if it's just to help bang around, just to help out.”

HELLO, AGAIN: UC honored players from its 1950-51 and 1975-76 teams at halftime.

UP NEXT: The Bearcats play at South Florida at 9 p.m. Thursday (ESPN). The Bulls (17-9, 9-4 C-USA) play at Memphis at 9:30 p.m. today (ESPN2).
