Football team loses another coach

The University of Cincinnati football team lost another assistant coach Thursday. Keith Willis, the defensive line coach, has accepted a job at Boston College.

Willis is the fourth staff member to leave this week.

Mike Tomlin, defensive backs coach, became the new secondary coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Larry Zierlein, offensive line coach, is the new offensive line coach for the Cleveland Browns.

Defensive coordinator Rick Smith, who was prepared to take a job at Minnesota, accepted a position at Kentucky under new coach Guy Morriss.

        • The UC athletic department was honored twice by the National Consortium for Academics and Sports for the 1999-2000 academic year.

UC received the Degree Completion Award for the third straight year, for the department's commitment and accomplishments in providing programs that assist student-athletes in earning degrees once their eligibility is completed. It also received the Outreach and Community Service Program award for the second consecutive year, for the department's work in the Greater Cincinnati community.

        • UC senior Mimi Merrill (Bolivar, Ohio/Tuscarawas Valley) earned Conference USA indoor track and field athlete of the week honors. Merrill turned in an NCAA provisional mark and placed first in the weight throw with a mark of 62-6 3/4 at the Indiana Invitational on Feb.3.
