UC not dead yet in C-USA

Bearcats can make up games head to head

By Michael Perry
The Cincinnati Enquirer

University of Cincinnati coach Bob Huggins is not waving a white flag just yet. Though four teams have better Conference USA records than UC (5-4), the Bearcats still can determine their own fate in the four weeks leading up to the league tournament in Louisville (March 7-10).

UC is in second place in the American Division, 1 1/2 games behind leader Marquette (6-2). South Florida and Memphis are tied atop the National Division (6-2) with Southern Mississippi (6-3) third.

The top team in each division receives a bye for the conference tournament, along with the two teams with the next-best records.

Without a bye, a team has to win four games to gain the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.

“With everything that happened, we're not dead yet,” Huggins said Monday. “It looked like maybe some of those people, with four losses, we weren't going to be able to catch. But everybody above us we play, and they've got to play each other.”

The Bearcats (15-7) have the second-most overall victories among C-USA teams. The only school with more, Southern Miss (16-5), plays host to the Bearcats on Saturday. The Bulldogs have the highest RPI ranking (No.47) among UC's remaining opponents. A quality victory on the road could build Cincinnati's NCAA resume.

UC has a week to get ready for Southern Miss, which plays at Tulane Wednesday. The Bearcats were off Sunday, had a light practice Monday and are off again today. Huggins is trying to get the players rested and healed during this break in the schedule.

After the Southern Miss game, the Bearcats play at Memphis (Feb.15) in what will be another tough road game. UC is 1-3 on the road in league games.
