Goggles don't blur McElroy's aim

UC junior Immanuel McElroy, who got poked in the left eye midway through the second half Thursday at Charlotte, wore tinted protective goggles Saturday against DePaul.

He said afterward his vision was blurry, but McElroy showed no ill effects during the game. He scored nine points on 4-of-5 shooting in the Bearcats' 91-70 victory.

Trainer Jayd Grossman said McElroy has iritis, an inflammation of the iris. The medication being used to reduce the pain and help the eye heal dilates the pupil and allows more light in, which can be irritating, Grossman said. McElroy is expected to wear the tinted goggles for five to seven days.

ALSO HURTING: Sophomore center Donald Little left holding his wrist with 18:29 remaining. He has a recurring hand sprain that was aggravated. He returned to action and ended up playing 26 minutes. Little finished with four points, six rebounds and three blocks. He has 36 blocks in his last 14 games.

LOCKED UP: UC junior Steve Logan was the primary defender against DePaul sophomore Joe Tulley, who averaged 15.5 points over the previous four games. Against UC, Tulley was 1-of-10 from the field with four points. But the 6-foot-2 guard pulled down eight rebounds, more than any other Bearcat.

DOMINATING: UC has defeated DePaul 19 of 20 times and 10 in a row at Shoemaker Center.

NOTEABLE NUMBERS: The Bearcats tied a season high with 11 3-pointers. ... Their bench outscored DePaul's 38-4. ... Antwan Jones has hit 6-of-12 from 3-point range over the past three games. ... Kenny Satterfield was 2-of-5 from 3-point range Saturday, hitting multiple 3s for the first time since Jan.13 at Louisville. Satterfield also has 31 assists and just eight turnovers in the last five games. ... Jamaal Davis had seven rebounds and has averaged 6.0 over the last four games. ... After turning the ball over a season-high 18 times against Charlotte, UC had just eight turnovers against DePaul, the fifth time it had fewer than 10.

STUDENT-ATHLETE: Freshman guard Field Williams represented the men's basketball team on UC's Scholar Athlete list for fall quarter. He was among 17 honored students, all of whom had at least a 3.2 GPA. Williams finished Saturday with six points and a career-high four assists in 14 minutes. He also came out with an Afro. “I had it braided, but it was lopsided, so I just took it out,” Williams said, smiling.
UP NEXT: The Bearcats play at Southern Mississippi on Saturday. The Bulldogs (16-5, 6-3) play Wednesday night at Tulane.
