CHARLOTTE, N.C. The tough losses, the kind the University of Cincinnati has had a chance to win or tie in the final seconds this season, are piling up. Chalk up No. 5.
Charlotte pulled out a 60-58 victory over the Bearcats Thursday night despite making just one field goal in the final six minutes.
The 49ers led by two points when UC called a timeout with 17.3 seconds remaining.
Kenny Satterfield found Steve Logan on the left wing. He attempted a 3-pointer, but it was blocked by James Zimmerman. Logan got the rebound, drove the baseline, then tried to get it back to Satterfield, but the ball went out of bounds off Satterfield with seven-tenths of a second left.
The pass was a little bit high, UC coach Bob Huggins said of Logan's attempt. It seemed to me like he hesitated shooting, probably because he didn't catch it clean.
All Charlotte had to do was inbound the ball before the students could storm the court.

Nobody really deserves to lose, Charlotte coach Bobby Lutz said. It's a big win against an excellent team. This is one of those games that can turn the season a little bit.
UC fell to 14-7, 4-4 Conference USA; Charlotte is 12-8, 4-4. Both are tied with Louisville for second place in the American Division.
It's another game that will haunt the Bearcats for their inability to execute a play in the waning moments. Xavier. Toledo. Marquette. Saint Louis. Now this.
Logan led UC in scoring for the seventh consecutive game with 24 points on 6-of-16 shooting. No other UC player scored in double figures.
You can't really expect a whole lot more from Logan, Huggins said. Maybe the better question is where is everybody else?
Cincinnati, which averages just 11.5 turnovers a game, finished with a season-high 18.
The 49ers used an 8-2 run to go ahead 55-49 with 6:17 left.

UC chipped away in between a lot of misses and turnovers. Logan hit two free throws with 4:53 to play. Satterfield got a layup off a Logan pass on a 2-on-1 break with 4:09 left. Logan made two more free throws with 2:57 remaining to tie it.
KenKay Jones went 1-of-2 from the line to put Charlotte back ahead and break a 3:54 scoring drought.
Then it got wild.
UC's possession: Logan missed a 3-point attempt with the shot clock running out, but the rebound went out of bounds off Charlotte. Logan dribbled behind his back, got into the paint, hit a jumper and was fouled. He made the free throw to put the Bearcats ahead 58-56 with 1:32 to play.
Charlotte's possession: Cam Stephens missed a dunk, but Demon Brown got the rebound and found Zimmerman across court. He fired a 3-pointer past an on-rushing Satterfield to make it 59-58 Charlotte with 1:02 left.
I knew I was going to shoot the ball because I was so wide open initially, Zimmerman said.
What kills us is they get an offensive rebound again, Huggins said.
After a Cincinnati timeout, Logan drove to the basket but his shot was blocked by Jones. After a 49ers timeout, Jamaal Davis fouled Zimmerman. He made one free throw, missed the other and UC rebounded.
But the Bearcats couldn't even get the ball to the basket in their final possession.
Jobey Thomas hit five 3-pointers and finished with 19 points to lead Charlotte. Diego Guevara added 12 points.
It was a highly charged atmosphere, not just inside Halton Arena but around it.
The bookstore was selling Crush the Cats T-shirts. There were four event spotlights waving in the sky. Inside, fans in the lower arena had Cream the Cats towels waiting on their seats. And the band members were shouting in unison at Huggins a good 35 minutes before tipoff.
Despite trailing by nine points just more than seven minutes into the game, UC was ahead 33-27 at halftime.
