Martin in NBA rookie game

UC great will face off vs. 2nd-year players, including Szczerbiak

Enquirer news services

NEW YORK — Former UC great Kenyon Martin is among the first-year players selected by the NBA to compete in the Rookie Challenge during All-Star weekend.

Martin, the first overall pick in the 2000 draft, are joined on the rookie team by the LA Clippers' Darius Miles and Quentin Richardson, Golden State's Marc Jackson, Toronto's Morris Peterson, New Jersey's Stephen Jackson, Orlando's Mike Miller, Chicago's Khalid El-Amin and Detroit's Mateen Cleaves.

The first-year players will face a team of second-year players Feb.10 in Washington, D.C.

Second-year players chosen to appear are Chicago's Elton Brand and Houston's Steve Francis, last season's co-Rookies of the Year, as well as Charlotte's Baron Davis, Washington's Richard Hamilton, Phoenix's Shawn Marion, Cleveland's Andre Miller, the Clippers' Lamar Odom, Minnesota's Wally Szczerbiak and Atlanta's Jason Terry.

Among the omissions from the rookie team are Vancouver's Stromile Swift, the No.2 pick in the 2000 draft, and Chicago's Marcus Fizer, the fourth player chosen. Swift has struggled, averaging 3.8 points a game. Fizer is averaging 7.2 points.

If any scheduled participant is selected to play in the All-Star game, he won't participate in the rookie game.
