Cabinet nominee has UC ties
By The Cincinnati Enquirer
Rod Paige, nominated by President-elect George W. Bush as Secretary of Education, was receivers coach for the University of Cincinnati football team in the 1969 and '70 seasons under head coach Ray Callahan.
Paige's UC receivers included Jim O'Brien, who kicked the game-winning field goal in the 1971 Super Bowl for the Baltimore Colts.
Paige, 67, left UC in 1971 to become athletic director and head football coach at Texas Southern. He eventually became dean of education at that school and most recently has been superintendent of Houston schools.
