CLEVELAND - The first possession of the second half Saturday, Toledo guard Nick Moore missed a jump shot, but teammate Robierre Cullars rebounded and scored.

University of Cincinnati coach Bob Huggins immediately called a timeout, turned and shouted at his bench: “Who's going to rebound? I want somebody who can rebound.”

“I was looking for somebody to do the fundamental things they should do,” Huggins said. “It's not hard to block a guy out. I don't think it's a technique issue; it's more of a performance issue.”

Toledo upset the 19th-ranked Bearcats 69-66 in the Gatorade Rock-N-Roll Shootout, securing the victory when 6-foot-8 forward Greg Stempin blocked a Kenny Satterfield jump shot with three seconds to play.

But as UC guard Steve Logan, who was short on a desperation 3-point attempt at the buzzer, said: “It should've never come down to a last shot. It's unbelievable that we'd come out and play so flat.”

The Bearcats (9-3), who saw a five-game winning streak come to an end, came back from an 18-point second-half deficit to lead in the final minutes. But Toledo (8-3) made the big plays in the last 30 seconds.

For the second straight game, Cincinnati played a lackadaisical first half. But Toledo is better than UNC Wilmington, which the Bearcats rallied to defeat Thursday night.

“We've got to grow up,” Huggins said. “It's frustrating. I'm trying to figure out what's wrong with us.”

Here's one problem: Toledo finished with a 42-35 rebounding advantage, including 14 offensive boards.

UC had not been outrebounded since the Xavier loss (Dec.14). It was the fourth time the Bearcats have been beaten on the boards this season; they have lost three of those games. Toledo outrebounded an opponent for only the second time this season.

What hurt Cincinnati again Saturday was that center Donald Little got in early foul trouble and played just 2:14 in the first half. He played almost the entire second half and finished with nine points, three rebounds and four blocks.

“In order for us to win, I've got to stay in the game,” Little said.

Toledo started the second half with six straight points and led 44-26 with 18:08 remaining. The Bearcats began their charge back with 11 straight points.

Logan tied the game on a 3-pointer with 4:21 to go. After a Toledo timeout and a Toledo turnover, Logan took an inside pass from Satterfield and scored to give the Bearcats their first lead at 61-59 with 3:48 left.

It was back and forth the rest of the way.

Toledo led 65-64 with 1:07 to play.

Satterfield lost the ball in the lane. Little picked it up and sent it out to Leonard Stokes, who was open for a 3 but missed. Jamaal Davis grabbed the rebound and scored to put UC ahead 66-65 with 44.7 seconds left.

Toledo called a timeout with 25.7 seconds left and again when it couldn't inbound the ball.

Freshman guard Terry Reynolds drove to the basket, drawing three UC defenders, then dished to Stempin, who scored on a layin with 21.3 seconds to go.

The Rockets led 67-66, and UC called a timeout with 15 seconds left.

Huggins said the final play called was either an isolation for Davis inside, or for Logan. Satterfield did not appear to look inside and went up for the same shot he tried to beat Xavier with.

“I told Nick (Moore), Satterfield's taking the shot,” Stempin said. “He's their best player. He's a clutch player. You've really got to be careful not to foul. He pretty much drove right at me. I just went straight up and got a piece of the ball.”

Satterfield refused to talk after the game. He finished just 1-of-7 from the field with a season-low four points, four assists and six turnovers and did not score until 12:44 remained.

Logan, a Cleveland native, led the Bearcats with 18 points. The smallest Bearcat, at 6-foot, also led the team with six rebounds.

Stempin finished with a game-high 21 points and nine rebounds. The Rockets came in shooting 39.3 percent from 3-point range but were just 3-of-19 from behind the arc.
