UC Notebook

Logan's trip home a disappointment

By Michael Perry
The Cincinnati Enquirer

CLEVELAND — Steve Logan said his weekend was ruined by UC's 69-66 loss to Toledo on Saturday.

The game was a homecoming for the junior guard. Logan grew up on Cleveland's east side and attended Lakewood St. Edward High School on the west side. He was Ohio's Division I Player of the Year as a senior.

He said he had about 400 friends and family members in the stands.

“I wanted to relax and see my family,” he said. “At the same time, this is a business trip.”

Logan had team highs of 18 points and six rebounds and was named UC's outstanding player of the game. Greg Stempin (21 points, nine rebounds) won the award for Toledo.

In last year's Gatorade Rock-N-Roll Shootout, Logan scored a game-high 21 points to lead the Bearcats past Gonzaga 75-68. In that game, Logan was 6-of-8 from the field, made all four of his 3-point tries and added four assists.

FINAL PLAY: Logan, who was 7-of-14 Saturday, appeared frustrated not to have a chance at the last-second shot for the Bearcats. That was taken by Kenny Satterfield, who was 1-of-7 shooting with four points in the game.

When a media member asked Logan whether he, too, wondered whether he should've taken the final shot, Logan said, “You think so, too?”

Later, he added, “I always want to take the last-second shot, no matter who we play.”

ROCK AND ROLL: UC played in the Rock-N-Roll Shootout for the sixth straight year and lost for the first time. It had defeated Temple (1995-96), Western Kentucky (1996-97), Massachusetts (1997-98), Dayton (1998-99) and Gonzaga (1999-2000).

LOOKING AHEAD: The Bearcats open Conference USA play on Saturday at home against Charlotte (6:05 p.m.). The 49ers were picked to finish third in the American Division in the preseason — behind UC and DePaul. Charlotte (7-4) lost late Saturday night 91-78 to host Arizona State in the azcentral.com Holiday Classic.

The only nonconference game left on UC's regular-season schedule is Jan. 27 against No. 4 Wake Forest at Shoemaker Center.
