Land's future in doubt after surgery

Doctor optimistic but cautious

By Mike DeCourcy
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Surgeon Angelo Colosimo said he “couldn't be happier” with the complicated knee operation he performed Friday on Cincinnati forward Eugene Land, but he is cautious about Land's future as a basketball player.

Land, a 6-foot-7 power forward who starred at Roger Bacon High, might be able to return to UC for the 2001-02 season, Colosimo said. Land will begin the rehabilitation process today and will not be able to play competitively for at least eight months.

“The damage wasn't as severe as we expected,” Colosimo said. “He does have a chance to come back and play, but we have to be guarded about his future. The injury was a very serious one. Tearing an ACL is one thing, and doing both ligaments is twice as bad.”

Land suffered a total dislocation of his right knee this summer. UC officials have not disclosed how Land was injured. He could not be reached for comment Friday. Land underwent simultaneous reconstructions of the anterior cruciate ligament and posterior cruciate ligament of his right knee.

“Eugene's usually very unemotional, but when I went in to see him afterward, he was in good spirits,” Colosimo said. “He was thrilled — very, very upbeat.”

Land averaged 3.2 points and 1.7 rebounds for the Bearcats as a freshman in 1998-99. He sat out last season as a redshirt after being dismissed from the team following his arrest on shoplifting charges. Land was expected to start at power forward. Junior-college recruit Jamaal Davis probably will now.

WOODEN AWARD: Sophomore guard Kenny Satterfield has been named one of 50 potential finalists for the John R. Wooden Award, which former teammate Kenyon Martin won this year.
