Ex-Bearcat to oppose Bengals

Monroe to play for Atlanta tonight

By Mark Curnutte
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Rod Monroe, a former University of Cincinnati basketball and football player, is third on the Atlanta Falcons' depth chart at tight end and is expected to play tonight against the Bengals.

Monroe, 25, was the Dallas Cowboys' seventh-round pick in 1998. He was waived and picked up as a free agent by Atlanta, which placed him on its practice squad for 15 weeks.

He played in two games with the Falcons last season, making one catch for an 8-yard gain.

At UC, the 6-foot-4, 254-pound Monroe played in 66 basketball games as a small forward, making four starts.

He walked on the UC football team in 1997, played in every game and started the final four, including the Bearcats' 35-19 Humanitarian Bowl victory.

“The biggest adjustment from basketball to football in the pros is the quickness and awareness,” said Monroe, a native of Hearne, Texas. “A lot can happen in a second and you can miss it, so you have to be prepared.”
