UC rewards Huggins with a pay raise
AD Goin: 'It was just to say thanks'

Cincinnati Bearcats basketball coach Bob Huggins was presented with a pay raise amounting to $54,000 as a reward for his run of five consecutive Conference USA championships and five straight seasons of more than 25 victories.
Athletic director Bob Goin said Thursday that Huggins will receive an extra $14,000 in his base salary (to $150,000), $15,000 more in radio/television income (to $140,000) and another $25,000 for public relations and speaking activities (to $75,000).
In addition, Huggins will have several incentive clauses added to his contract: $10,000 if he's named coach of the year in Conference USA; $10,000 for the C-USA regular-season title; $10,000 for winning the C-USA tournament, and $25,000 if he's named national coach of the year.
It was just to say thanks, Goin said. I don't anticipate that money to compete against a pro team that wants to pay $5 million a year. I'm not in that business.
Goin said last month that he wanted to make sure Huggins' compensation was in line with his team's domi nance of Conference USA. That became an issue when Memphis hired John Calipari as coach for a package that could be worth more than $750,000 without incentives.
Based on the new incentives, Huggins would have added $95,000 to his income during the past three seasons.
Huggins already has incentives for NCAA Tournament appearances and advancement. He also receives a $50,000 annual bonus and additional income from an apparel deal with Nike and summer camps. If he remains at UC for two more seasons, Huggins will take ownership of an annuity whose premium payments, to date, totaled $650,000.
