Bearcats' recruits signed, sealed, delivered

Davis, McElroy come from junior colleges

BY Mike DeCourcy
The Cincinnati Enquirer

The Cincinnati Bearcats received signed letters of intent from their final two recruits in the class of 2000: 6-foot-8 power forward Jamaal Davis of Barton County (Kan.) Community College and 6-3 guard Immanuel McElroy of Tyler (Texas) Junior College.

McElroy completed UC's five-man recruiting class when he committed during his visit last week. He averaged 21 points, 4.7 assists and 8.5 rebounds in his sophomore year and was named the NJCAA Region XIV player of the year.

“Immanuel is a great athlete who gives us the degree of athleticism we need on the perimeter,” UC coach Bob Huggins said. “He is very adept at breaking down people off the dribble and is very explosive to the goal.”

Davis played at Purdue in 1998-99 after sitting out his first year to establish academic eligibility. He was a reserve in 12 games, averaging 2.8 points and 1.8 rebounds, before deciding to leave school at the semester break.

At Barton County, Davis averaged 16.1 points and 9.4 rebounds for one of the nation's top teams. Barton County was 32-2 and No.1 in the final NJCAA poll but was upset in its regional tournament. Davis was named third-team All-American.

“Jamaal gives us a big, strong, skilled player we need inside,” Huggins said. “He's an outstanding passer with good ball skills.”

BANQUET: UC announced that its men's basketball banquet set for Tuesday has been sold out. The audience had to be capped at 1,200 to fit into the Shoemaker Center.
