High school forward commits to UC

BY MIKE DeCOURCY
The Cincinnati Enquirer

The Cincinnati Bearcats have received a commitment from 6-foot-8, 220-pound power forward Rod Flowers, a senior at Butler High in Huntsville, Ala.

Flowers chose the Bearcats over N.C. State, Northwestern, Alabama, Virginia and Louisville.

“The program, the atmosphere, the success, the tradition,” Flowers said when asked why he chose UC. “They thought I could come in and play the power forward, because they're losing four seniors in the frontcourt.”

Flowers is averaging 21 points and 15 rebounds for his high school team, which has a 17-4 record and is ranked eighth in the state's largest classification. With UC coach Bob Huggins in the stands for his game Tuesday, Flowers scored 28 points and grabbed 27 rebounds.

Flowers said seeing Huggins in the stands “got me going a little bit.”

Flowers has not yet made a visit to the UC campus but plans to make a trip after his high school season.
