AP voters drop UC to fourth

Stanford No. 1 for first time

The Associated Press

Stanford, off to an 8-0 start despite not having Mark Madsen the last seven games, was No.1 in the Associated Press college men's basketball poll Monday for the first time.

The Cardinal's highest previous ranking was last week's No.2. They moved up when Cincinnati, which had been No.1 the last five weeks, lost 66-64 to Xavier on Saturday night.

Cincinnati (8-1) was fourth, with one No. 1 vote and 1,536 points.

“No.1 really didn't mean anything to me,” said UC senior forward Pete Mickeal. “What means something is in March, when we keep winning game after game and keep going farther and farther in the tournament.”

Said UC coach Bob Huggins: “I don't think people are going to play any less hard against us now. I don't think it was ever an issue.”

Xavier, which has been unranked all season, received the 27th-most votes.

Stanford received 60 first-place votes and 1,729 points from the national media panel. It became the fourth team from the Pac-10 to lead the rankings, joining Arizona, Oregon State and UCLA.

The Cardinal found a way to beat Iowa, Auburn and Georgia Tech — all on the road — without their star forward. Madsen, who injured a hamstring in the season-opening win over Duke, expects to return for Stanford's holiday tournament next week.

        Ohio State is ranked No.16.

Mike DeCourcy contributed to this report.
